How to use Prednisone

Make sure you take Prednisone just as prescribed without missing your doses or skipping them. Your dose may need to be adjusted if a stressful situation is likely. Make sure you talk to you health care provider if you know you are going to be under a lot of stress for quite some time. Some disease or a surgery may bring a lot of stress and needs to be discussed with the doctor that prescribed prednisone or any other health care professional that will be able to give you the right advice. Prednisone can make your immune system weaker, which can make it easier for you to get infected. A relapse of some infection you recently had is a possibility, which is why it’s recommended to tell your doctor about every single medical condition you have or used to have. You will need to avoid being around people that are ill and contagious and inform your health care provide of any cases when you might have been infected. Vaccines may not be as efficient when prednisone is used. The same is true for any other steroid medications though. Your dose of prednisone may need to be changed occasionally to make sure you are benefitting from the treatment. The liquid form of prednisone is supposed to be taken with the help of a special measuring device (usually a spoon) that comes with the drug. Keep on taking prednisone as prescribed and for as long as prescribed, as otherwise unpleasant withdrawal symptoms are possible. If you are going to some other doctor make sure you mention the fact of using prednisone, as this may be very important for the treatment. It’s very important that you remember to take each dose of Prednisone that you are supposed to take, as otherwise your treatment may not be as efficient and you may not achieve the result you wanted to achieve. If you happened to miss a dose of Prednisone – take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for the next dose. In that case just skip the dose you missed and go back to the regular dosing schedule. Avoid using more than one dos of Prednisone at a time, as this is unlikely to bring you any additional benefits and can actually cause side effects that could be avoided. Although an overdose of this medicine is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms, taking prednisone for a long time can cause some health effects. You may experience thinning skin, increased facial hair, increased acne, easy bruising, menstrual problems, impotence and loss of interest in sex. All those are normal symptoms in the course of the treatment, but you will need to tell your health care provider as soon as possible if any of those symptoms get bothersome. Make sure you notify your health care provide of the fact of taking any medications that can cause interference with Prednisone, such as diuretics, seizure medications, blood thinners, rifampin, oral diabetes medications, aspirin, cyclosporine, or ketoconazole. This list is not complete and there are some other medicines that can cause interactions when combined with Prednisone. Therefore, you will need to be very careful if you want to start some new medication and always discuss this step with your health care provider.
